here’s a question from Chelsa:

“hello Nickhole. I just had a quick question: is Aveeno a safe lotion to use during the healing process? I went with my mom to her last tattoo session, and her guy (who also tattooed my aunts) told her to use Aveeno for her lotion. thank you for your time, and keep up the great work ^_”

Aveeno has a long line of products, but the only ones that are safe for the healing process are the ones with zero fragrance. ANY lotion for that matter, must be fragrance-free and water based.

WHEN IN DOUBT: flip the bottle over and read the ingredients. the FIRST one should be water (or purified water, eau, aqua, agua, etc.) and nowhere in the entire list should it say fragrance or perfume.

anything with fragrance will also have a high alcohol content, because the fragrance needs to evaporate quickly in order for you to smell it. this not only dries the tattoo out, but is excruciatingly painful, like being on fire. if you’re tempted, you may give in and use some fragrant lotion if you forget your tattoo lotion. you will immediately regret your decision, i swear.

to avoid forgetting, or inconveniencing yourself, buy a very small or travel size lotion that you can take everywhere. keep it to yourself. keep it clean, and don’t use other people’s lotion. gross.

i personally like aveeno, but everyone is different. i also like curel continuous comfort. i used to be a lubriderm fan, but lately it burns, i don’t know if they changed the recipe or what.

bottom line:
fragrance-free and water based
