Pregnancy and getting a tattoo

2008-06-07 05:28 PM | 1 comments

Question:
Can something Terrible happen if I get tattooed while I am pregnant? What can happen? Why shouldn’t I get tattooed while pregnant? What should I do? When is it Safe to get tattooed again?

Answer:
I do not recommend any female getting a tattoo or piercing while pregnant or nursing. While in rare occurrences getting a tattoo will hurt the fetus or nursing infant, there is also the chance that there may be a problem with the healing of the tattoo.

While pregnant the body is working overtime and cannot spare the resources needed to heal the tattoo properly. Also, while nursing a woman’s body produces antibodies that are to be passed to the infant.

Anything can happen! From a mild allergic reaction to a full-blown infection. From a woman’s perspective and as a professional tattoo artist, this is definitely NOT the time to be taking chances. You need to focus on making a great kid, which means making good choices and postponing selfish decisions until after you are completely healed after the child’s birth.

Once you are no longer breast-feeding, and are healed of any wounds the baby may have left you, you can get tattooed. If you are still unsure as to when this might be, ask your doctor.

So what do you do until then? If you want to decorate and show off your pregnant body, do it safely. You can look for local salons that do real henna or buy a henna kit yourself! Of course. please ask your medical professional what they suggest.

Please be safe! And remember that most tattoo studios will adamantly refuse tattooing a pregnant or nursing female. Please take this into consideration. Your friend that assures you nothing will happen and “knows a guy that will do it” doesn’t really know what they’re talking about, nor do they understand the nature of the situation. Getting tattooed in an unprofessional setting, especially while pregnant or nursing is an especially bad idea. While temporarily annoying, you can safely continue getting tattooed later.

Hey! I just got off the phone w/ you & asked you a million questions, about my first tattoo, what I want, etc, etc, lol. So sorry, for keeping you so long :( but am beyond so thankful for your knowledge & extreme kindness/hospitality. You were the SWEETEST most patient person ever!!! Thank you. Plus an AMAZING tattoo artist, and I really respect what you wrote above. You are 100% true & very intelligent & were correct w/ all that could happen & worse, but what a Dr. told me. The baby & its health + the mothers health is the single MOST important things during pregnancy, not a Tattoo. A Dr. told me, also that it could be fatal to a pregnancy! So, cant imagine anyone even trying to get one during this special time. It makes me wonder “How that blessing of a child is going to be raised”, “If his/her mother actually wanted/tried to get Tatt’ed while pregnant??”, “and what frame of mind they’re in to even be raising a child!?” …scary. Only because, tattoos can be done ANYTIME. Pregnancy isnt and is an extreme blessing. Plus, which Ive seen first hand unfortunately & know for a fact. Even though I want my stomache tattoos soooo badly already, but….I’ll wait, till Im done having kids b4 I would ever get any, as much as I really cant wait, & so excited for. Cause EVERYBODY should know to refrain from getting stomache tattoos at ALL, if theyre considering having a child in the future. Cause God knows, how big your stomache gets, and sometimes every where else, lol, I know! cause I have a child. & what happens to your skin’s elasticity during pregnancy + potential stretch marks & Im pretty positive, its worth waiting for ANY stomache tattoos until youve finished having children, cause Ive seen PLENTY of the after effect…ugh. & Let me just say, it wasnt pretty, very sad for the person
:( & what a waste of beautiful, probably very expensive, meaningful tattoos, they truly loved, to be destroyed in a matter of 9 months :( Anyway, Nickhole…keep up what your doing, youre amazing & seem to be a beautiful person inside, as well as out! ive never been treated so nicely, by a complete stranger, especially when I asked you a million questions, that Im sure got annoying. Im sorry. You/“this Artist”(for the public)is/are extremely knowledgable about Tattoos, styles, everything!! Not to mention, She does AMAZING work, & is just the sweetest, most patient, kind person, that you can tell LOVES what she does & is REALLY good at it!! I HIGHLY recommend you, Nickhole & “YOU” (the public)to go to this Artist!!!(Living Dead Tattoos)
Thank u Nickhole for everything. Much Love & Respect, God Bless! :)
